Sharing lessons learned on climate change along Boston's harbor | Waterfront Ambassadors photo diary
As the program begins to draw to a close for the summer, the Ambassadors spent the week sharing what they’ve learned throughout the season with local youth.
“This week's theme was ‘sharing knowledge,’ and the Ambassadors had the opportunity to pass on the knowledge they've acquired about climate change, sea level rise, and environmental justice,” noted Jessica Zhou, Waterfront Ambassadors Assistant Program Manager. “They were excited to give back to young people in East Boston by spreading awareness about important issues."
The first educational project took the shape of an art installation, as the Ambassadors again partnered with artist and UMass-Amherst Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning Assistant Professor Carolina Aragon and her team including Nigel Cummings, Hannah Welsh, and Claudia LaFontaine. The installation featured representations of several harmful air pollutants known to be present at four different sites in East Boston, and highlighted the anticipated effects of sea level rise on those same sites.
Following that work, the Ambassadors facilitated a workshop on environmental justice and climate change for youth aged 10-13 at the Piers Park Sailing Center, using scavenger hunts, images, and fun drawing activities. They also gathered opinions and ideas from the group about what they would like to see in the design of the future Piers Park III.
