Currently the park is in the community design phase, which began in early 2021. Pre-construction work will include evaluating constructability, pricing, and scheduling—working closely with The Trustees and landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. (MVVA). Construction on the park is expected to begin in mid 2023.

The Turner | J&J team was chosen after an RFP process, and stood out due to their experience with complex special marine construction projects and their commitment to diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity (DBIE) practices.

“Turner  and J&J are thrilled to work together for the pre-construction  of the Piers Park III project,” the firms wrote in a joint statement. “This joint venture team has a special passion for work in and around Boston Harbor, and they take a great pride in working on the harbor and how it positively effects the people who live here and the visitors who travel to our city. From deep foundations and sub sea-level parking garages, to buildings that rise from the shoreline, to the parks and harbor-walk that grace this part of our City, and to our involvement in Boston Harbor Island Alliance (now Boston Harbor Now) we take pride and enjoyment from this work.

“Our preconstruction process brings projects from concept to reality.  From evaluating constructability, pricing, and scheduling of options to planning the construction sequence with the City and all stake holders, the process launches successful on-site construction. Our companies are truly committed to our sustainable and resilient environment and the same sustainable and resilient community. From architectural seawalls, to City of Boston based apprentice work programs for residents and minorities, you will find a commitment from Turner and J&J to make the Piers Park III Project a success.”

The updated design draft for Piers Park III builds on the first draft, which was released in spring 2021, using community feedback. To learn more or view additional images, click here.

A second draft of the design for Piers Park III was shared with the public in February, after incorporating community feedback gathered through public meetings, surveys, and online comments. Feedback on design and programming options continues to be gathered as the design team led by MVVA work to refine the design and share a third draft later this year. In its current iteration, the waterfront park design includes open lawn space, wetland landscapes with natural habitat, and areas for picnicking, kayaking, and interacting with the water in an amphitheater-style tidal pool.

A public meeting to review the evolving design, updated with more community input, will be scheduled and announced in the coming months, with options to weigh in via email, text, survey, and more on onewaterfront.org/feedback.

“We are thrilled to be getting close to the next phase of this work, following what has been a very successful and collaborative design process,” said Nick Black, Managing Director of The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative. “Thank you to all who have weighed in on the designs so far, and come out to meet us at community events to ask questions—there is still time to take part! Take a moment to fill out an online survey to tell us what kinds of events you and your family want to attend when the park opens; post a comment on the current design to share what you like and what you still want to see; and join us at the free events we have in Piers Park I this summer—we hope to see you there.”
