Family festival, Boston history, and outreach | Waterfront Ambassadors Photo diary
For the third week of their summer program, the Waterfront Ambassadors spent time learning about the history of the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway.
The group met with Michelle Moon, Principal + Founder at Civic Space Collaborative, who led the teens through an introduction of the beloved public space’s history, and horticulture. The green space runs from the Jeffries Point waterfront to Constitution Beach, and is a popular and well-used place for recreation including walking and biking.
The week also included a tour of UMass Boston’s waterfront campus, with Sustainable Solutions Lab researcher Patricio Belloy. During this visit, the Ambassadors learned about the scientific climate change research being done in East Boston, how some of these impacts are projected to affect vulnerable populations, and what’s being done to adapt for the future.
A visit to the aquarium, and two community events rounded out the week. The Ambassadors visited the weekly Farmer’s Market, where they met many community members and shared information about the future Piers Park III in East Boston. The group also helped to host the Sabores de Nuestra Cultura Family Festival in Piers Park, organizing games, and connecting people to free sailing.
The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative will host one more Family Festival in August and one in September, including another opportunity for free sailing! To register, or learn more, click here.

In 2022 this program will run for seven weeks in July and August and will incorporate a variety of job-readiness and other enrichment sessions in addition to community projects. This program is being supported for a third summer by presenting sponsor TD Bank through the TD Ready Commitment.
