First design concept for East Boston's future Piers Park III to be shared during March public meetings

What aspects of park design are most important to you? What kinds of programming would you like to see at Piers Park III? These are some of the questions being asked of the public in an online survey about the future East Boston waterfront park.

Above: An online survey is continuing to gather public input on the future Piers Park III.

In addition to input gathered during January community meetings and ongoing conversations with neighborhood groups, answers from this survey are helping to inform a first drafted design for the space, currently an abandoned pier adjacent to Piers Park I and the future Piers Park II.

An initial design concept will be completed by the end of the month, in time to share during the next Piers Park III Public Meetings being held on March 29 (in English) and March 30 (in Spanish). Both sessions will be hosted by The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative and landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. (MVVA).

“This is an iterative process—we’re continuing to gather and incorporate public input as we work on the initial draft design for Piers Park III,” says Chris Donohue, MVVA Associate Principal. “For anyone who has not been able to attend a public meeting, or even if you have, please take a few minutes to weigh in on the online survey or virtual message board. What do you want to see at this park, and how will you use it? It’s critically important that we design this world-class park with, and for the community. We’ll have a first draft of an inspiring design to share during the March 29 and 30 public meetings, and are looking forward to getting more feedback and ideas, which will help to inform the next draft.”

During the March public meetings participants will be encouraged to react to the initial design, propose  changes, ask questions, and voice concerns. These design and community input sessions are expected to continue throughout 2021.

“Thank you to all who have weighed in on this design process so far,” says Nick Black, Managing Director of The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative. “We’re listening, we’re learning, and the design team is working very hard to conceptualize a park that serves community needs and addresses neighborhood concerns—on top of being a stunning waterfront destination in one of the most unique neighborhoods of Boston. We hope to see and hear from many community members on March 29 and 30 so that we can talk through this design together and start working on the next draft with your input. Please tell your neighbors and friends—anyone with an interest in this future special place.”

For anyone who cannot attend the next meeting, future dates will be announced in the coming weeks, and the survey remains open for input at any time. A virtual message board is also taking suggestions, for anyone wishing to leave a quick note or thought.
