After receiving site developer designation from Massport, The Trustees and MVVA are now beginning a community design process for the waterfront park, a phase which is expected to continue throughout 2021. Meetings with neighborhood associations and community groups began in the fall, with input opportunities including additional public meetings continuing throughout the project.

Currently the Piers Park III site is an abandoned pier, adjacent to Piers Park I and the future Piers Park II. The Trustees and MVVA are seeking to transform this space into a welcoming and dynamic waterfront park that addresses community needs and concerns. During the virtual evening sessions MVVA Associate Principal Chris Donohue and Senior Designer Roberto Ransom shared images of public parks their team has designed for other urban waterfronts, including Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York, and Martin’s Park on the Fort Point Channel in Boston, giving examples of features that could be possible and beneficial for the Piers Park III site. The actual design of the East Boston park will take shape as community input is obtained.

Questions posed to The Trustees team and MVVA included how visitors to the future park might be able to access and interact with the water; what kind of programming will be offered; how Piers Park II and Piers Park III are related; and whether any of the site’s immigrant history will be noted and told.

“Thank you to all who joined our first public meetings to hear about the project and to ask questions about the process and next steps,” said Nick Black, Managing Director of the Boston Waterfront Initiative. “As we continue to gather input and ideas from the community, the designs for this park will begin to take shape. Additional community meeting dates will be announced soon, and we welcome you to leave suggestions and questions on our new feedback page!”
