A panel of experts in social innovation, equity learning, social impact and community engagement joined One Waterfront on Tuesday evening for a discussion on equitable design and outreach.

The discussion, embedded below, is the first panel in the “Building One Waterfront” series, and welcomed: Dr. S. Atyia Martin, former Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Boston, and CEO & Founder of All Aces, Inc., a professional development consultancy helping to advance diversity, equity and inclusion; April De Simone, Co-Founder and Partner of designing the WE, a for-benefit design studio positioned within the fields of social innovation and community driven social, cultural and economic development; and Mauricio Garcia, Chief Program & Engagement Officer for Friends of the High Line, a nonprofit organization and a public park on the West Side of Manhattan devoted to reimagining public spaces to create connected, healthy neighborhoods and cities.

The panel was moderated by Shelley Sylva, Head of Social Impact for TD Bank.

“We’re grateful to our panelists for leading such an important and engaging discussion, and to our attendees for joining with questions, and for taking part in several polls throughout the evening,” said Nick Black, Managing Director for the Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative. “As was emphasized in last night’s panel, this is not a linear process, and the work does not end here. I, personally, took away several key insights about what it means to authentically engage in equitable outreach, and our team will be working hard to develop deeper community connections in our One Waterfront work."

The next event in the “Building One Waterfront” series will explore the concept of resilience and, importantly, how to fund the designs and interventions necessary to protect a waterfront City such as Boston. The virtual discussion will take place on October 22, and registration is open now.
