"Building One Waterfront" speaker series continues with discussion on innovative green solutions for waterfront cities

The Building One Waterfront speaker series launched in September with a discussion centered around designing for equity and engaging diverse communities. The panel welcomed thought leaders in equity and social justice, examining real-world examples of practical, effective, and thoughtful community engagement during open space development and programming.

Since the September event, the One Waterfront team has received official site designation from the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) to design a welcoming and resilient waterfront park in East Boston. Adjacent to Piers Park and the soon-to-be Piers Park II, the plot is known as Piers Park III. Landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. will work with The Trustees and the community to develop designs for the site, currently an abandoned pier.

Now the speaker series continues with the next virtual panel event on December 9, “Green solutions for a waterfront city.” The event will be moderated by Gretchen Rabinkin, Executive Director of the Boston Society of Landscape Architects, and will welcome renowned practitioners:

  • Michael Grove, Principal and Chair of Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Ecology, Sasaki

  • Kotchakorn Voraakhom, International ASLA, CEO and Founder of Landprocess and the Porous City Network

  • Dr. Indrani Ghosh, Resiliency Technical Leader, Weston & Sampson

This discussion will feature stories and examples of innovative green solutions being used to protect waterfront cities and communities from the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels.

“Rising sea levels and storm surge is something every waterfront City is having to contend with, and expected to face more frequently in the future,” says Nick Black, Managing Director of the Boston Waterfront Initiative. “Right now we have an opportunity to build and retrofit spaces with resilient, sustainable infrastructure to help adapt our communities to the effects of climate change. We are excited to learn from our expert panelists, as they share their own experiences in developing these kinds of innovative solutions and designs.”

One Waterfront’s mission is to contribute to Boston’s quality of life by creating and managing significant parks that serve as world-class destinations, support diverse community needs, and utilize green solutions to help support the City’s climate resiliency goals. The December 9 panel discussion will be hosted online from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., and is free for all, though advance registration (available here) is required. Spanish translation services will be provided.

“In addition to this speaker series and ongoing meetings with neighborhood associations and community groups, we are looking forward to hosting open virtual sessions about Piers Park III on January 12 and 13,” adds Black. "We will be releasing more information in the coming days, and look forward to answering questions and gathering input. All are welcome to attend.”
