Testimony on a district-wide planning process for Boston's waterfront
Members of the public were invited to testify Thursday evening in front of the Boston City Council during a hearing on a district-wide planning process for Boston's waterfront.
The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative, One Waterfront, took part in the testimony with Community Outreach Coordinator Gabriela Ramirez stressing the importance of centering the community in design and programming throughout waterfront development projects. Ramirez shared her own experiences in community outreach through the Piers Park III project.

Hello! My name is Gabriela Ramirez, I was born and raised in East Boston, but my parents immigrated here from El Salvador. I am the Community Outreach Coordinator for The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative, which advances a bold vision for iconic, public open space on the Boston waterfront. The Boston Waterfront Initiative seeks to create accessible, climate-resilient open space that serves diverse community needs and brings value to our vulnerable harbor city.
Our first site is Piers Park III in East Boston. For the past two years, we have worked alongside the community to develop the design of the park and future programming through our community surveys and public design review meetings. We have focused on making the project accessible to the community and provided various options to engage with us and share their feedback. Community members can meet us at Piers Park for our regular community events, text us their responses to our questions, email us, fill out our survey, or simply sit down with our team and talk to us about their opinions. We've heard many stories and memories people have of the waterfront. Such as the Quinceañera picture stories, like mine, many kids have fond memories with their grandparents, and parents, who do not have outdoor space in their apartments, have shared that they seek an outdoor space that they can call theirs.
As I mentioned, we've hosted community meetings in English and Spanish to discuss the project, but most importantly, we've also met the community where they are. We've gone to the farmers market, block parties, parks, local food distributions, peace circles, cultural celebrations, etc. to talk with the community, learn about what the waterfront means to them, how our work can help amplify their stories and memories, and how we can make Piers Park III a welcoming space where everyone feels welcomed and can engage the waterfront in their community. To this day, we have engaged with over 3,500 people so far this year. And we continue to seek community input on Piers Park III and work with our community partners to ensure that the project is community-driven and that Piers Park III can be a welcoming, climate-resilient space that my family, friends, neighbors, and everyone in East Boston can feel welcomed in.

Hemos ido al mercado de agricultores, block parties, los parques, distribuciones locales de alimentos, círculos de paz, celebraciones culturales, etc. para hablar con la comunidad, aprender sobre lo que significa la costa para ellos, cómo nuestro trabajo puede ayudar a amplificar sus historias y recuerdos, y cómo podemos hacer de Piers Park III un espacio adonde todos se sientan bienvenidos y puedan conectarse con la coasta. Hasta el día de hoy, hemos hablado con más de 3500 personas en lo que va del año. Y seguimos buscando la opinión de la comunidad sobre Piers Park III y trabajamos con nuestros colegas comunitarios para garantizar que el proyecto sea diseñado por la comunidad y que Piers Park III pueda ser un espacio para todos y resistente al clima que mi familia, amigos, vecinos y todos en East Boston puede sentirse bienvenido.
