Waterfront Ambassadors return for Summer 2022

The 2022 Waterfront Ambassadors season is underway, with 11 teens from the Boston area including East Boston, Chelsea, Roslindale, South Boston, and Dorchester.

Throughout the summer, the teens employed by The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative program learn about waterfront issues in and around their neighborhoods and communities, and work with other local non-profits and environmental organizations in Greater Boston.

Now in its third year of operating in East Boston, the Waterfront Ambassadors program has welcomed back two alums for their fourth summer, both of whom are taking leadership roles as “Ambassador Leader” and “Assistant Program Manager.”

“Our Ambassadors had a great first week, getting to meet so many people in and around the community in just their first few days,” said Alma Acuna, Waterfront Ambassadors Program Manager. “We’re excited for a whole summer filled with projects and activities around the harbor, including a collaboration with Piers Park Sailing Center youth, stewardship projects on the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway, and a UMass Boston campus visit.

In their first week, the Ambassadors learned about the future Piers Park III in East Boston, and the current phase of this work—a community design process gathering feedback about what the park should look like and what programs should take place there when it opens. The orientation was followed by three trips, starting with a Farmer’s Market visit on Wednesday to meet members of the community and share information on how anyone can weigh in on the Piers Park III draft design. A trip to Constitution Beach offered beautiful views of Boston Harbor, and the week rounded out with a visit to Calf Pasture Cove at UMass Boston with scientists from the Stone Living Lab, to learn about local climate impacts.

In 2022 this program will run for seven weeks in July and August and will incorporate a variety of job-readiness and other enrichment sessions in addition to community projects. A regular blog series will document their work, and images from their weeks, throughout the summer!
