Recreational programming at the future Piers Park III in East Boston

The Piers Park III site, currently an abandoned pier, offers spectacular views of the Boston skyline from across the harbor.

In its first iteration, the Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. design for the future park incorporates grassy lawns, a tidal pool and spots for picnicking. Many of the elements were selected thanks to community feedback and input from public meetings and an online survey.

To further refine this initial design, the team is now gathering insights on how community members would like to use the park. What activities would you want to do at this future waterfront park? What kinds of events would you attend? What would make this a valuable, welcoming space?

Following a discussion last week about potential Arts & Culture programming like live performances, a movie screen and salsa socials, the waterfront team on Wednesday night gathered opinions and ideas for future recreational programming, alongside co-hosts from the East Boston YMCA and the Piers Park Sailing Center.

“Make yourself heard about what you want—now is the time, as we’re doing this process,” noted Joseph J Gaeta Jr., Executive Director of the East Boston and Charlestown YMCA branches. “It’s really important so that we, as non-profit leaders, can hear what you want from The Trustees and work in collaboration to offer these programs to you all.”

Some of the programming suggested included kayaking in the warmer months, ice skating in the winter, and having open areas for kids to run and play. Access to the water was also one of the elements that resonated with many attendees.

“I think anything that gives people the opportunity to enjoy the waterfront and actually get on the harbor itself is huge, it’s something that a lot of people don’t get to experience,” said Alex DeFronzo, Executive Director of the Piers Park Sailing Center. “It’s wonderful that this space is going to be open and accessible to everyone. There’s a lot of different things that that pier could have become, and a park is the best outcome possible.”

Gaeta added, “We’re really excited about the ability to host wellness opportunities for the community and have that beautiful backdrop of the skyline. I think we have the best view in the City of that skyline.”

The third public webinar being hosted as part of the Piers Park III programming series will take place on Wednesday, June 30 (via Zoom) and will explore potential climate-related and educational programming opportunities. The virtual event is free, and advanced registration is required. To learn more or to register, click here.

“We’re so grateful for the participation in this process,” said Nick Black, Managing Director of the Boston Waterfront Initiative. “Having a grasp on how residents want to use this park, and how they want to experience the space, will help us revise the design and ultimately deliver a word-class, welcoming park that can become a valued part of the East Boston neighborhoods that surround it.”
